On March 21, 1945, we left Banika and then headed for Okinawa, stopping off at Ulithi in the Caroline Islands. At Ulithi I received word that J.D., my younger brother, had been killed in action in France.

We left Ulithi on March 27, 1945, and landed on Okinawa April fools Day - also Easter Sunday - April 1, 1945.

On May 2, 1945, I located and destroyed a Jap machine gun that had the company pinned down, and received the Bronze Star for my action.

On May 20, I was wounded, and was in the field hospital for 20 days. The battle for Okinawa ended June 21, 1945. K Company had many wounded and 36 killed. NEXT>>
