We arrived in Melbourne, Australia, March 31, 1943, and I was assigned to Regimental H.Q. Company, Fifth Regiment, First Marine Division, on June 1, 1943. A short time later I was transferred to K Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Regiment.

For six months we trained in Australia side-by-side with Guadalcanal veterans. I made PFC (Private 1st Class) on Jury 1, 1943, shortly after I shot Expert with the Ml rifle. NEXT>>
